Construction of houses in favelas and development of a program to access micro-credit facilities
For the past three years, Accor Mexico employees have been supporting the NGO “Un Techo Para Mi Pais” (a roof for my country). Un Techo Para Mi Pais operates in 15 Latin American countries including Mexico. Established in 1995, the NGO aims to improve living conditions for marginalised groups through access to education, health and micro-credit.
To answer the request of our Mexican staff members, the Accor corporate Foundation has decided to support them by funding a 2 steps project :
Step 1 – Building houses: to enable families living in a favela to live decently in a house:
The Construction of ten ‘permanent’ houses over a weekend was done in June 2009 with 50 Accor staff members and the ten families now inhabiting them.
(More on the construction week-end)
Step 2 –Offer theoretical tools (teaching) and technical ones (microcredit) to the inhabitants of these underprivileged communities to help them integrate in economic life and thus become more independent:
- Construction of a community centre in each community hosting the requisite activities for education and micro-credit programs.
• Program for teenagers: language development, maths and Spanish, learning about work organisation and habits for six months
• Program for adults: reading and writing, personal and basic technical training in business for three months
- Micro-credit program: 18 persons
Access to the micro-credit program is contingent on regular attendance of courses, assessment by the NGO and the quality of the business project.
This project is within the scope of “Humanitarian and Emergency”.
