Focus on Pessac Rugby
Playing rugby as an educational experience for youths in difficulty.
Rémy Souffleux, General Manager of ibis Bordeaux Pessac.
Pessac Rugby, a French association, was established in 2005 to promote rugby – and play it. It has been running its Street Rugby project, introducing people to rugby in various parts of town – including Cité de Saige, a hotspot where underprivileged youths now play this sport – since 2006.
Website of the association: www.pessacrugby.fr
The fact that the Street Rugby project was such a hit led Pessac Rugby club to build a pitch at the foot of the buildings in Cité de Saige housing estate to treat the disadvantaged youths living there to an opportunity to discover and play this sport.

There are several objectives:
- reach out to people who would not otherwise come to the rugby club;
- share the values that rugby stands for (solidarity, respect, team spirit, support…);
- building social ties and promoting mixity (Pessac Rugby will be transferring a few of its training sessions to the new pitch);
- cement the project for the long term with a special-needs educator running the introductory and training sessions once a week.
The introductory and training sessions are run by a State-accredited special-needs educator with a major in rugby. He can organise sports activities (competitions, games to sharpen skills, inter-district tournaments, etc.) and educational activities (treasure hunts, “eco-citizen” workshops…) for populations in difficult situations.
