Humanitarian and emergency
Focus on Hungarian Red Cross
To help the flood victims of July 2010 in Northen Hungary.
Edina Toro, Director of Human Resources, Accor Hungary/Slovakia.
The Hungarian Red Cross is the Hungarian unit of the Red Cross international organisation. Created in 1881, it provides medical assistance, food aid, accommodation and employment support services to particularly disadvantaged people. It runs 19 centres in Hungary.
From May to July 2010, Hungary was severely affected by very heavy rainfall leading to unprecedented flooding, with the evacuation of over 10,000 people rendered homeless by the floods. The Hungarian Red Cross, appointed by the Hungarian government as sole coordinator of the humanitarian relief operation following this disaster, set up a specific platform of assistance responding to the needs of the local population (furniture, blankets, medicines…).
The employees of the 19 hotels of Accor Hungary/Slovakia participated actively in the relief operation by donating equipment, setting up a web address dedicated to employees and suppliers for on-line donations, organizing fund-raising evenings and welcoming children victims of the flood in the hotels of the Group… The employees asked the Accor Foundation to contribute funds to the Hungarian Red Cross operation to buy medicines and disinfectant products.
